Thomson Launched Telephony Business In India



Thomson Asia Limited, a subsidiary of the Thomson Group and a leader in the designing, manufacturing and marketing of residential and business phones, has launched its products under the brand called Alcatel.

The initial range of basic-telephony products will be available in more than 50 different designs, suited for residential and business segments. One of the products expected to launch soon includes Symbio, a phone that combines Internet radio and cordless telephony. These products will be sold through multi-brand retail outlets and service providers. It would be retailed across 60 key cities in India.

According to Mr Dider Goujard Managing Director, Thomson Asia Limited, "the company is setting up a research and design centre in Bangalore for advanced solutions and hopes to capture at least 10 percent of the Indian market in the coming 12 months".

Indian basic-telephony market is said to be around 5,50,000-6,00,000 units per month. Service providers, comprising BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Tata and Local Private Exchanges account for more than 50 percent of the market, with over 3,00,000 units per month.

Retail Chains and Corporate business contributes 2,50,000 to 3,00,000 units per month. Alcatel products will be competing across these segments to reach the end users.
