Canon Unleashes EOS 50D, Uses DIGIC IV Processor



Canon this week announced the first camera to incorporate the company’s new DIGIC IV processor. The EOS 50D, a 15-megapixel digital SLR, is the successor to the current 40D, and is intended to address the growing enthusiast market by offering a bump over the 40D's spec, at a fair savings over the 5D, a professional model.

The new 50D will use a 23.3mm-by-14.9mm sensor, similar to the 40D, but will be Canon's first SLR to incorporate the new " DIGIC IV " image processor for delivering a faster shooting performance. This model also carries a rating of 6.3 frames per second (a wash with the 40D's 6.5 frames per second), and a burst mode of up to 90 JPEGS using UDMA CompactFlash cards (the 40D is rated for just 75 consecutive JPEGs).

Other improvements to the 50D include a 3-inch LCD screen with much sharper images due to the 920K pixels, compared to the 40D's LCD screen with 230K pixels. The 50D's LCD screen will also offer a live-view option for using the LCD screen as a view finder. An HDMI is added as well, which provides a digital connection for picture playback on HDTVs. The body of the 50D will be identical to the 40D, but will be a little lighter (730 grams compared to 740 grams).

Live View mode in the EOS 50D will include face detection capabilities, not available on the 40D. The auto focus system remains the same, with 9 cross-type sensors, as does the 14-bit A/D conversion system. The 50D adds a second, finger grid display for composing images, and adds a Creative Auto mode to allow budding photographers to control camera settings based on plain-English descriptions of a setting change’s effect.

The EOS 50D, priced at USD 1,399 (body only), is scheduled to start shipping by October this year.
