Google Takes Chrome Out Of Its Bag, Challenges IE And Safari

The browser war is all set to heat up, this week, as Google would make way for their brand new web browser beta, called Chrome, available for download in more than 100 countries. This download is only available for Windows, but they are working on versions for Mac and Linux.

The open-source browser, called Chrome, first appeared on an unofficial Google blog in the form of a comic book. "As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit 'send' a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome," the company said in the official announcement that appeared late Tuesday afternoon after the Internet began buzzing about the comic-book site. The blog posting was by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director.

According to the post, we can expect a browser that has a streamlined and simple user interface: Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go. Better speed and responsiveness are also part of Chrome, which features a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of Web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

The search giant's free new browser will be open source, allowing others to modify the code, and the company is still working on versions compatible with Apple's Mac and the Linux operating system.

This latest dent aimed at Microsoft, comes just a week after Microsoft released it’s own Internet Explorer 8 beta. IE is used by 75 percent of surfers, with Firefox a distant second at 10 percent. Google just re-upped its advertising partnership with Firefox through 2011.
