iPhone Will Sell on AT&T Till This Decade End
Apple may be bound to its exclusivity deal with AT&T until the end of this decade, according to USA Today’s sources. The newspaper asserts that AT&T agreed to the large-scale subsidies on the iPhone 3G's pricing in exchange for a one-year extension on the provider's sole rights for the device line in the US, pushing it back from its original 2009 date.
According to AT&T chief Randall Stephenson, when talking costs, USD 199 is the point where demand leaps. He said reaching such a price for the iPhone was a mutual imperative not just for himself, but for Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder, as well.
Once having purchased the device, an iPhone subscriber has to pay an average of USD 100 every month for voice and data services; this is nearly twice what other subscribers pay.
Although the deal hasn’t been publicly released, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has said that AT&T is “very happy” with its terms.
