F&S Recognizes TippingPoint’s Valuable Contribution to Vulnerability Research

Frost & Sullivan recently selected TippingPoint as the recipient of the 2007 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Market Penetration Leadership in the vulnerability research market. TippingPoint posted gains in terms of its vulnerability discoveries of over 80 percent for 2005 alone. This is over 50 percent larger than the growth of any other competitor in the market. This award is based on data from a year’s worth of vulnerability research that is included in Frost & Sullivan’s analysis, 2006 World Vulnerability Research Markets.

The company’s vulnerability contribution program has driven the advancement of its research agenda and has coincided with overall market growth. In a market as fiercely competitive and dynamic as vulnerability research, it is imperative to have a well established research organization.

“TippingPoint uses a two-prong approach to vulnerability research. First, it maintains an internal research organization called DVLabs, a traditional research organization that hires talented researchers who specialize in vulnerability discovery,” says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Robert Ayoub. “Second, it launched the Zero Day initiative, a program designed to tap the worldwide community of security researchers, which has since grown to over 500 researchers making it one of the largest third party programs.”

TippingPoint was one of the first companies to augment its expert security research team with a vulnerability contribution compensation program. This program significantly boosted the number of vulnerabilities reported, confirming its success.

Information gained from its research is incorporated into TippingPoint’s Digital Vaccine® service, a subscription-based service that updates customers’ intrusion prevention systems (IPS). Thus, TippingPoint customers are better protected from unrealized threats.

“TippingPoint continues to prove its security leadership by becoming the first intrusion prevention system vendor with a vulnerability research incentive program,” notes Ayoub. “The fact that TippingPoint has more vulnerability discoveries than any other IPS vendor confirms the program’s success. Although the ZDI program has drawn controversy, TippingPoint has successfully demonstrated its competence in responsibly working with vendors to disclose the vulnerability with a corresponding patch. In turn, TippingPoint’s customers have some of the greatest zero day protection an IPS can provide. With a program like ZDI, everyone benefits: the research community is compensated for their efforts, the vendors are provided knowledge of security flaws, and TippingPoint customers are protected well in advance of a threat.”

Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has exhibited market share leadership through the implementation of outstanding market strategy. The recipient has displayed excellence in all areas of the market leadership process including the identification of market challenges, drivers, and restraints, as well as strategy development and methods of addressing these market dynamics.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
