PC Market Quick to Adopt Turbo Memory, Hybrid Hard Drives
Hard Disk Drives will embrace NAND cache technology in the near-term, ramping up significantly by 2011, reports In-Stat.
Better known as "Hybrid Hard Drives" and "Turbo Memory," these solutions offer key features not found in today's PCs that can be added economically when provided with the proper software support, according to the high-tech market research firm.
"Although we expect the PC market to convert rather quickly to either Turbo Memory (also known as Intel's Robson technology) NAND HDD caches or to hybrid hard drives, we do not anticipate this to be high on the list of priorities of the PC-buying public," says Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst.
"Instead this phenomenon is likely to become what
psychologists call a “Hygiene Factor” something that is only noticed if it is missing."
Recent research by In-Stat found the following:
- This technology is being driven by industry giants: Microsoft, Intel, and Samsung.
- Nearly 200 million HDDs will ship with NAND caches worldwide in 2011.
- It is currently impossible to predict whether the hybrid drive or turbo Memory will win this contest, but it is unlikely that both will survive.
The research, "NAND Speeds Up the PC Hard Drive", covers the worldwide market for NAND technology in PC hard drives. It provides forecasts for NAND-cached HDD unit shipments and disk sales in the PC market by type through 2011. It contains extensive analysis of the technological issues involved in this market, including drivers and barriers.
